Why We Set Goals: A Small Dot That Fills an Empty Heart

A life with direction does not lose its way

Goals give me a reason to feel alive. We mark a point not for grand success, but to love who we are today.

Why We Set Goals: A Small Dot That Fills an Empty Heart
DMS / VISUAL ESSAY

It was neither dazzling sunlight nor a noisy alarm that opened the morning. It was an empty heart. A succession of days when I felt I should be doing something, yet had no idea what I actually wanted. I opened my eyes inside that emptiness.

This was 10 years ago. Leaning against the kitchen table as I poured a glass of water, I suddenly asked myself an unfamiliar question.

"Where am I heading right now?"

My days stretched out like a journey with no destination. I was moving, but never felt I had arrived. Every morning I opened my eyes with a heart as heavy as lead, breathless at the thought of living another today exactly like yesterday.

🌱 A Small Resolution Takes Root

I wanted to escape that weight. So I made one very small, modest resolution.

‘This month, let’s earn a certification.’

Even opening a book felt unfamiliar. The words I had kept at a distance behind the excuse of being busy did not come easily, and memorization was a difficult battle I had not faced in years. Yet strangely, whenever I discovered that I understood a little more today than yesterday, a small joy gathered like a drop of water in a corner of my heart.

And after a while, I held the certificate in my hands. To the world it was no more than a sheet of paper, but to me it was an immense and precious experience.

‘I can do things, too.’

For the first time, I understood: a goal can become a reason to feel alive.

Writing Goals

"It was not simply an exam. It was my first memory of learning to believe in myself."

⚓ An Anchor That Holds Me Steady

From then on, I began designing my own days. There was no need for anything grand. Read one page of a book, stretch for 5 minutes, write one blog post.

Those small pieces came together and changed me little by little. A goal was more than a task; it was a compass that gave my life direction.

A life with direction does not lose its way. Even after failing, you can rise again; even after pausing, you can return. Because you have a direction to turn toward again.

Now, when I wake in the morning, I first think of today’s goal. It is not an enormous plan that transforms the entire day. It is simply one small dot that keeps me from forgetting myself. As I move toward that dot, the day becomes a line, and those lines come together to draw ‘who I am today.’ A goal is a firm anchor that catches me whenever I waver.

🎁 A Way to Love Today

Sometimes I ask myself: ‘What will doing this change? Do I really need to go this far?’

Whenever I do, I recall the flutter I felt on the day I earned that certification 10 years ago. Ever since, I have known: setting goals is not just about changing the future. It is a way to love who I am right now more deeply.

Making a plan for myself, acting on it for myself, and praising myself for following through. Could there be a more active expression of self-love?

So today, once again, I write a small goal in my notebook.

Drink a glass of water

Take in the morning sunlight

Think of three things I am grateful for

And live today with care, for the sake of tomorrow

That is why I set goals.
