The Complete Guide to AI Image Styles: 10 Categories
DMS / VISUAL ESSAY

This article has been adapted from an article I discovered on Medium.

After using AI image tools for a while, you eventually hit a wall: the results stop improving beyond "fairly decent." There is usually one reason: your style vocabulary is too limited.

Vague instructions such as "make it cinematic," "make it beautiful" or "give it feeling" let AI retreat to a safe average. Specify a style name, film stock, shooting technique or art movement, however, and the result changes completely.

This is my collection of more than 150 style prompts across 10 categories, developed through hundreds of rounds of trial and error. They are ready to use in all the major image AIs, including ChatGPT, Midjourney and Nano Banana 2. I selected only prompts I have actually tested with Korean subjects and locations.

The Four Layers of a Good Prompt

Before choosing a style, keep this structure in mind. The most successful prompts invariably contain these four layers.

  1. Output medium or render format — surreal photography, digital painting, 3D render, concept art
  2. Style name or visual movement — Unreal Engine 5 photorealism, solarpunk matte painting
  3. Lighting direction and emotional mood — volumetric god rays, cold clinical lighting, golden backlighting, bioluminescent glow
  4. Aspect ratio and dimensions — 16:9, 1:1, 2.39:1 CinemaScope

The key is to combine styles. The most original results emerge where two styles intersect.

Where familiar and unfamiliar visual grammars meet, a scene no one has seen before can emerge. Finding that intersection is the real pleasure of prompt design.

Pick one and get started now. Feel free to share which one you tried in the comments.
